Counter-Cultural Thinking is Unpopular

It is countercultural, against most of the notions of living in the digital age with its technical trinkets and disconnected social connections, filters, likes, shares and being whatever you want; to be sober-minded.

Who cares about sober-mindedness?

Why should you care if you are aware and awake to the physical world moving around you?

It seems like an easy question to ignore and reject so you can save your place of escapism and proposed happiness. If you accept what makes you happy, it does not matter if it is real or not. That is the state of mentality that we have got to, I feel; so it is real. Reality is not what is true but what we make it to be for us. How have we ended up here?

It’s a joke that truth and fantasy have switched places.

What reality have you got around you, is it founded on truth?

We’ve gone from a truth-seeking and fact-finding culture to opinions and emotional outrage. We no longer care that 2×3=6, we can make it equal whatever we feel like, just because we can or makes us momentarily happy. A culture that feeds your every desire without care for the person inside, the soul.

There can never be hope at the end of a journey like this, how can you persuade yourself you will be safe jumping out of a plane without a parachute? Yet society is making us believe that if it makes you happy you should do it, not counting the indeterminate cost to your health, life or soul.

It reminds me of my children when they were babies, they would go for sweets every opportunity they had, breakfast, lunch and dinners; that would be their choice every day. If I gave them what they wanted because they felt like it or made them happy, then I would be looking at gums and decaying teeth. There is a deep sense of giving what is needed, not just what is wanted.

Fantasy is NOT real, feelings fluctuate and no restraint; destroys.

Preferring pleasure that God

2 Timothy 3:4 says people will become “…lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God”.

People have begun to love their own pleasures rather than love God. How worrying and sad, we’ve lost our way and no longer find pleasure in God who is truth, but in whatever pleases us… happiness. These emotional distractions change like the weather and have no foundation for true joy and happiness.

As society edges towards the apex of outrage and outbursts, emotional quicksand, easily influenced minds that balance on random shots of adrenaline, we need to ask ourselves, why truth in these times is so important. Why reckoning with the facts of life and the God of creation is needed. Why sober our thoughts and get real with the laws and unchangeables around us every day; it’s so we can know what is and is not, and what this life is all about.

It’s not popular, is counter-cultural, it’s potent and unsettles people. Clear thinking and challenge breathe hope into the fantastical polluted air because truth clears the fog and sets free the mind and heart.

Will you choose sincere truth over emotional fantasy today?
